Silver jewellery made by students

Taught by jeweller Claire Acworth, this course is hands-on from start to finish. By the end of the day, you will have created your own design in sterling silver, with one bezel set stone if you choose.

So to avoid designer’s block, you will be asked to bring 3 or 4 drawings of what you would like to make.… but don’t worry if you don't have any ideas beforehand. We will analyse each of your drawings against some key design principles so that your piece is not only beautiful, but makeable too!

Starting with an introduction to tools, basic techniques and safe working, you will discuss and practice the principles of soldering. Before finalising your design, you will have the chance to experiment with piercing, texturing and forming so that you can incorporate any of these techniques into your piece.

Material costs - Silver will be charged per gramme & semi-precious stones will be available. Overall costs may be £25 - £75.

These courses are run in Wernog Wood, which is project that Claire runs with her partner Rob. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wernog Wood is a hidden gem, right in the heart of the Clwydian Range, north east Wales. Our beautiful oak and ash woods are teaming with birds and wildlife, bluebells and wild garlic and an invigorating stream. Just 200m from Offa’s Dyke and footpaths in every direction, you can enjoy evening walks in the heather covered hills, down into Ruthin, or along Offa’s Dyke itself to a variety of rural pubs.

Wernog Wood offers an array of traditional and contemporary craft courses, instructed by practicing artists and crafts people. Courses are tailored for beginners as well as those with experience. Ranging from single day to week-long courses, you will learn your new skill within our charming woodland workshop, or at the jewellers bench. There will be options for one to one tuition, small groups, or larger groups of up to eight people.

Stunning indoor and outdoor work spaces are available to hire for other artists to run their own short courses or exhibitions.

If you are staying for more than one day, they offer simple camping in a wildflower meadow... but watch this space as they aim to develop a range of quirky accommodation to round off your woodland experience.
